7 Chromium Shadows, a concept for a series of compositions, is a result of experiments with a Yamaha 4 track cassette recorder, where the cassette recorder is used as an intuitive device for manipulating the performance of a soloist. It is also a study of cassette tape as a format and material, which is highlighted in the graphic scores made for the live performances.
The process of creating the composition starts by recording the playing of the soloist, trying to capture particular characteristics of the soloist’s playing. This material is then further recorded and played back 7 times on a 4 track cassette recorder, using it’s mechanical properties as a musical instrument. The performance tape is the result of this handicraft.
A graphic score is referencing the performance tape with spectral images, and providing graphic phrases that are interpreted and improvised upon, by the performer.
7 Chromium Shadows has been so far composed for vocals, bass clarinet and tuba.
